CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Oxylus sat in the small laboratory given to him on the ship. He was working at his station—not even pretending, really, as the scans of the energy field around them were interesting even to him. He was analyzing the way that the merging of the two universes had affected the natural laws of the resultant universe. There wasn’t much for him to do otherwise. He had made sure that the datachip that humans recovered from the Val’ayash had the location of this system. The security protocols of Val’ayash data were good, as were those of humanity, but they didn’t really stand up to the level of an AI that had existed for longer than they had a written language. Iris had easily hacked their systems and added it in. He had known about the system through one of his other agents, who had contact with these Amarith.

His research into the Val’ayash had shown him that this was one of the most preserved systems with their presence and he hoped that they would find the location to the Val’ayash home system soon. He could’ve just told them, of course, but then he would’ve had to prove it. It was rare that mortals trusted beings such as he was; and even if he managed to prove it, they would’ve probably spent years trying to figure out what scheme he was playing in the background. No, it was better if they arrived to the same results on their own. The Qash’vo’tar and the Zhal had already intended to attack the Val’ayash base system if they found it. With the addition of humans, Oxylus would be able to sneak in with the attack and then find Chaos and Order. The bonded human and the dragon could then be brought in and told what he required of them.

And finally he would have his revenge.

Things got more complicated once the Val’ayash fleet was discovered in system. The humans and their allies were outnumbered, and even with their advantages it would be a hard-fought battle.

Oxylus could deal with the fleet easily enough himself, but his power had a unique…essence to it. He would be risking Chaos and Order finding him before he was ready to strike, and there was no telling what they would do then.

No, it was better if he didn’t interfere. But Arsagor and Kane… They were powerful, more so than they even realized. Even with the dragon still recovering, they could be a big factor in the coming battle.

Oxylus released just a thread of his power, sending it to the planet to locate them. Perhaps he could nudge them in the right direction. He found the temple, and then the dragon inside—Kane wasn’t with him, but Oxylus located him easily deeper in the temple.

There were a few other beings around him and Oxylus moved his perception over them, barely registering them. Then, he froze. There was one person inside the room that was different than the others. He felt…familiar. It took him a moment to recognize who it was, and he stood up in shock.
